A Common Point Of View
As many of you are probably aware, we had an essay competition in December 2014 based on waste management, and the person who won first place now has their essay officially going global!
So hats off to Aparajita Guha, winner of the December 2014 Waste Mangement Essay Competition!
Here's what they wrote:-
As the alarm clock rings, I wake up to my life in the city. No, the sounds I then hear are not the typical sounds of birds you would expect - it is a cacophony of horns and other noisemakers. Peculiar enough, my ears are used to it. If you look out through the window, what you do see is thick, dusty fog. It makes me cough, cough, cough. Ugh. The landscape around me? Sky-piercing buildings everywhere, hardly any tree. No, this is not The Hunger Games I am talking about, it is a reality. We cannot take our terrible condition for granted any more, for then, only doomsday awaits us. . So, as a concerned human being, I would like to do my best to conserve the world I live in. Charity begins at home, and so must my steps. I can save electricity by switching off lights and fans whenever possible, yes; but I should also reduce my time on the computer and the TV. Also, the tap should be turned off when not in use, especially when brushing. I should also bathe using a bucket and not the shower. As for other activities, as I exercise daily, I shouldn't use the treadmill and instead, jog outside. It also will not hurt to keep a plant in my house - the oxygen will surely freshen up the room. . There goes my personal life. As for my school, I should always go by the bus or carpool, as it generates less pollution. I should also use the pages of my notebook judiciously-it will surely do the trees some good! And for the other secondary aspects of life, such as travel, scientific research has shown that if each passenger/passengers would limit their luggage to less than 20 kg, then global CO2 emissions would reduce by 1 million c.c. per year. . That is only the basics. If I could, I intend to use solar cookers and solar water heaters and things as such. These resolutions are not only for me, but for every responsible human being out there. Let this new year be not only for us, but also for the earth - a new year full of greenery and health. It is true - united we stand, divided we fall. And if this year, 2015, we do not take enough care, then what a hard fall it will be for us humans - to be wiped from the face of Earth for eternity. Keep this is mind, and happy new year!
